When kids arrive at the Club in the afternoons, their first program is a focused homework program called Power Hour. This allows kids to decompress from school and complete their homework before moving on to more “fun” activities and programs. The focused time will enable students who need it to get one-on-one help from staff, while those who don’t can cruise through their assignments.
In trying to figure out the best way to support Club Kid, Anthony, who needs extra help during Power Hour, the staff came up with the idea to partner him with Chase, who is more self-sufficient. Last week the two of them began partnering up during Power Hour for a chunk of reading time. Anthony is struggling with reading, and Chase is his new reading buddy. The two of them quickly found a rhythm, and it has been amazing to see the growth in both.
Working with a peer has allowed Anthony to learn through a different lens, and it has been incredible to see Chase engaging in such meaningful ways. They read through books together, and afterward, they will discuss what book was their favorite, what parts they liked, and why. This has taken Power Hour to the next level for both members so they can live out what the staff models to them daily.
None of this would be possible without the community’s support, so thank you for your investment in building great futures!
