Club kids come from various backgrounds, each with their own strengths, weaknesses, and challenges. Fifth-grade member, Sam, was struggling to read at his grade level. With help from the school district partners and very supportive parents, the Club staff developed a plan to give Sam extra support, time, incentives, and encouragement to get him back on track. By building rapport with Sam, the staff learned which books he enjoyed most and started there. Sam made great strides and went from being entirely resistant to reading to being thrilled to open a book.
Sam’s mother came to us with tears of happiness! She shared that she has all of her tasks for her graduate program listed on a whiteboard at home, and Sam started reading items from the list to her. He has never been able to do this. Together, we will do whatever it takes to build great futures.
